English Literature

Durham University

At this Summer School, students in the past have delved deep into the mysteries surrounding Conan Doyle's best-known tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902). Reflecting the sorts of ways students study English at university, we examine how this novel is more than just a rip-roaring crime story, but gives us important access to the cultural contexts of the late-Victorian and Edwardian society that took up Sherlock so avidly. Various guest lectures from some of our academic experts will draw together the main themes of the course, and will also prompt you to reflect on the core skills that you will develop by pursuing English at university. Students will also have the opportunity to network with current lecturers and PhD students within the Department. The key text may be subject to change.
