University of Warwick
Climate change is one of the most important global challenges of the 21st century. Humankind faces a monumental task of making significant changes in political, social and economic terms to meet the United Nations Paris Agreement objectives for emissions reduction. In this subject stream, we will address how the politics of climate change is not only about making sure climate mitigation happens, but also about ensuring that sustainable transitions to resolve the climate crisis are more just, taking into account the varied socio-economic consequences of climate policies. Understanding the history of climate change and responses to it, provides perspective on how we got where we are today.
We will identify and assess attempts to mitigate for climate change in the main policy areas involved including energy, agriculture, transport and buildings. We will critically reflect on why government actors, at local, national and global levels, make the choices they do, what constrains decisions, and how some constraints can be overcome. We will also address the impact of climate activism on the politics of climate change. We will analyse how policies and activism around climate change have changed over time and what this can tell us about the current situation.
