Why did you apply for the programme?

Following the recommendation from my sixth form, I applied to attend a Sutton Trust programme for a historical studies course. I wanted to not only experience the expansion of my historical knowledge at a higher academic level but also engage with a multitude of like-minded people who share the same passion and drive as myself.

Did you have any worries before attending?

As I chose to attend the Sutton Trust programme at the University of Nottingham, embarking on a 4-hour train journey, solitude, was my greatest fear. However, there were multiple ambassadors that patrolled Nottingham train station; ensuring you received a warm welcome and were transferred to the campus safely. Travelling alone was a great experience which will help me adapt when I venture to university next year where I will be required to live independently, without my family and friends.

What were your highlights of the programme?

The highlight of my Summer School experience includes engaging in university-style seminars which enabled me to learn from the knowledge of others and share my ideas, thoughts and opinions amongst like-minded intellects. Therefore, these sessions fuelled my drive for knowledge, and this has aided the maintenance of my motivation whilst entering Year 13. Other than an amazing memory that I will reminisce upon for time to come, the comfortable and welcoming environment created by both the Sutton Trust staff and students alike, enabled me to flourish socially and experience an improvement in my confidence levels. Moreover, I gained academic knowledge and UCAS advice which has helped to elevate the quality of my personal statement.

What are your plans for the future?

In the future, I would like to hopefully attend a highly competitive University; one within the Russell Group for instance and complete a BA History degree. I would like to experience either a term or year studying abroad, for a future prospect of working as a History teacher!

What would you say to someone who is unsure about applying?

There is nothing to lose by sending in an application to attend one of the incredible Summer Schools. The opportunity to experience an insight into university life; with both the academic and social elements incorporated, is invaluable!
