University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh has a rich history of teaching mathematics and is currently ranked 5th in the UK for mathematics (QS 2021). As part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Edinburgh forms one of the UK's leading research centres in mathematics. You will explore a wide range of mathematical disciplines through a mixture of lectures, tutorial discussions, practical work, and engaging group project work. Our fantastic team of academic staff and students will work with you to explore engaging topics designed to develop your analytical and problem-solving skills, and have fun along the way! Previous summer school topics include Monte Carlo simulations, statistics, machine learning, maths and magic, number theory, integer solutions to Diophantine equations, Markov chains, matrices, primality testing, and differential equations.
Edinburgh is home to one of the largest biology departments in the UK, and is currently ranked one of the top 5 universities in the UK and top 20 universities in the world for biological sciences (QS 2021). Biological sciences explores the study of living organisms, covering everything from the interactions of animals in their environment, to how genes are expressed. With such a broad scope, there is something for everyone. Previous summer school topics include human evolution, Drosophila genetics, bioluminescent bacteria and water toxicity, embryological development, and immunity and disease. You will work with world-leading academics and recently trained young scientists in lectures, tutorials, fascinating group project work, and practical laboratory experiments.
You will also have the opportunity to try out several other subjects during the subject taster sessions, which reflects the flexibility of the Scottish higher education system.
