If you enjoy researching and discussing current events and issues, then sociology is the perfect subject for you. Sociology examines relationships between individuals and groups, issues of belonging and identity, the social causes of cooperation and conflict, and the way societies and social institutions are formed and change over time. Previous summer school topics include gender intersectionality, social media, barriers to education, race and ethnicity, and what the future holds for young people. By taking part in Edinburgh's summer school, you will be joining one of Europe's top 10 universities for Sociology (QS 2021). You will explore the sociological understanding of important issues through a mixture of lectures, tutorial discussions, and insightful group project work led by our fantastic team of academic staff and students.
Philosophy has been taught at The University of Edinburgh since its foundation in 1583 and offers a stimulating and flexible learning experience. Currently ranked 20th in the world for philosophy (QS 2021), Edinburgh's programme introduces you to the thinking of some of the great philosophers of the past and present, and illuminates the connections between diverse areas of human experience. It also makes you more aware of the assumptions that form the basis of your beliefs. You will work with our fantastic team of academics and students to consider some of the great philosophical questions through a mixture of lectures, tutorial discussions, and insightful group project work. Previous summer school topics include time travel, ethics, metaphysics/philosophy of science, morality, and mind, brains and computers.
You will also have the opportunity to try out several other subjects during the subject taster sessions, which reflects the flexibility of the Scottish higher education system.
